Review: Murder of Crows

Murder of Crows
Murder of Crows by Annie Bellet

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The second in the Twenty-sided Sorceress series finds Jade returning to where she was born to confront the family who threw her out for being different. Her estranged father begs for her help because something magical is murdering the Crow People. It’s a very straight forward adventure chasing down a vengeful bad guy but the main thrust of the book is learning more about Jade and exactly who she is and where she came from.
Most of the cast from the first book gets to stay home and it’s just Jade and her lover Alek to the rescue. It’s really mostly a Jade adventure as she bulls ahead on her own to solve the problem.
It lost some of the charm of the character interactions by shrinking the cast but is still a fun read. It’s VERY fast to read. I powered through it in a few hours. It’s enjoyable and I think I’ll remain a fan of Jade and company.

Review: The Watcher

The Watcher
The Watcher by Sean Platt

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Watcher is a short story about a former cop turned private eye who has a penchant for breaking into people’s houses just to see what they’re doing and live vicariously through the artifacts of their life.
He is a very tragic character who had a daughter that was raped and killed. His marriage is falling into silence since that event and his life has become a cycle of work and spying on neighbors.
When a girl in the neighborhood leaves him a note that her father is a monster who is raping her he is torn between the need to act and not being discovered for his own wrongdoings.
It’s a good psychological study of why people act as they do, why victims protect their victimizers and coping with terrible loss. I didn’t really think the twist at the end was necessary but I can see it as adding a layer for Frank (the central character) if they write more about him.
It’s a fast read and really well done. There is NOT any happy ending so expect to put it down feeling like you’ve been kicked in the gut but Frank is a great character with potential and I hope they write more about him.

Hell Ascendant Ep2 First Draft DONE

November 28th, 2016 Comments off

I am officially done with the first draft of Hell Ascendant Episode 2. It was a slog but I managed to get there thanks to participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).

Now I let it lay for a week and then begin the editing process. I hope to have it out by the end of the year. Hell for Christmas!

Now I can begin working on the sequel to Fanatic’s Bane:  Invader’s Bane!

Hell Ascendant Episode 2 coming soon
