Review: The Deepest Black

The Deepest Black
The Deepest Black by Rainy Kaye

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I decided to give this book a try for two reasons.
1) I have a partial story written about evil faeries and wanted to see how someone else handled it.
2) The opening sentences that I read in the ‘look inside’ feature on Amazon.
“While all of my friends are partying on a Friday night, I’m out hunting fairies. It’s not like I’m stalking Tinkerbell. They’re evil, they’re coming for me, and they won’t stop unless I kill them first.”

C’mon who could not read a book with an opening like that?
It’s a fun romp with destiny, curses and the fate of two worlds in the balance. I like the way fairies are described by Rainy. It’s a different take. The protagonist is an interesting gal who is struggling with her desire for safety and her need to do what is right for everyone even though it might result in her fleeing safety for certain death.

Review: American Nocturne

American Nocturne
American Nocturne by Hank Schwaeble

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a collection of short stories. They’re all very dark. Some have a noir feel, others straight up horror story. I enjoyed some more than others but that’s how it works with collections. ALL were well written, it’s just that some grabbed me better. Personal taste and all.
The stories that made it worth the price of admission was a Cthulhu mythos tale involving time travel. It was a perfect homage to Lovecraft in that it wasn’t so much about the tentacled horrors but the tininess of man and our useless struggles against the old ones.
The other story that really made this collection for me was a Kolchak the Night Stalker tale. I’m so happy the author obtained the rights to write this tale. It was a perfect match for the feel of the old 70s series that I loved as a young teen.
Give this book a read. You’ll find something you’ll enjoy.
